Religious Marriage

Planning your religious wedding

If you are planning to marry in the Church of England or the Church of Wales you must first contact the vicar at the particular church.

You are normally required to live within the parish, or be on the parish role or have some close connection to the church or for it to be the normal place of worship of at least one of the couple.

In most cases the vicar will be able to do all the necessary preliminaries by the reading of the Banns and will also either be able to register the marriage or organise for the registration to take place, through an Appointed Person.
In a few instances where this is not available you may have to consult with the Local Register Office to arrange for a Registrar to attend.

In some cases involving foreign nationalities or previously married couples you may be asked to do civil preliminaries which would involve arranging an appointment at the local Register Office in which District you are resident to give your "Notice of Marriage". (Please refer back to the main page for some further detail.)

To be married in nearly every other religious denomination other than the Church of England or the Church of Wales you will have to give your "Notice of Marriage" at the Register Office in the District in which you reside.
