Religious
Marriage Planning your religious wedding If you are planning to marry in the Church of England or the Church of Wales you must first contact the vicar at the particular church. You are normally required to live within the parish, or be on the parish role or have some close connection to the church or for it to be the normal place of worship of at least one of the couple. In most cases the vicar will be able to do all the necessary preliminaries by the reading of the Banns and will also either be able to register the marriage or organise for the registration to take place, through an Appointed Person. In a few instances where this is not available you may have to consult with the Local Register Office to arrange for a Registrar to attend. In some cases involving foreign nationalities or previously married couples you may be asked to do civil preliminaries which would involve arranging an appointment at the local Register Office in which District you are resident to give your "Notice of Marriage". (Please refer back to the main page for some further detail.) To be married in nearly every other religious denomination other than the Church of England or the Church of Wales you will have to give your "Notice of Marriage" at the Register Office in the District in which you reside. For further clarification and detail please visit the link to the General Register Office This information is issued for general guidance and is not a complete statement of the law. For further information on any aspect of the formalities to, or the ceremony of marriage or civil partnership, please seek the advice of the Superintendent Registrar at your local register office. The telephone number and address can be found in the Register Office database or your local telephone directory under 'Registration of Births, Deaths and Marriages'. |
